The truth is that cats have to be taught how to use a litter box. When they are with their mom, they watch her use one and understand how to do it themselves. For most kittens, this happens when they are almost 4 weeks old.
To us, it may seem that they already knew how to use the litter box because it happens so quickly and completely passively. The mother teaches the kittens by example. However, if you found a stray as a pet or got yours from someone else, then you might have to teach the kitten yourself.
If that is the case, then don’t worry. It is absolutely possible to potty train your kitten. Here are two options!
This method will involve sectioning off one part of the room where you will be training your kitten. Once you have done that, grab the litter box, and place it in the sectioned off part. Now, add the rest of the things, including the bedding, dishes and toys to the litter box. Next, add the kittens.
When they are kept in the same part of the room all the time, they will have to use the litter box to go because they will realize it helps with the smell. It might take them some time to get there. There will be “incidents” and you should be ready for them by stocking up on as many paper towels as you can.
Keep in mind that all cleaning liquids can turn out to be toxic for small animals. It is better to use natural cleaners.
Another way to convince your kitten that they should use the litter box is to make them comfortable in it. You can try different brands of litter until you find one that they prefer. Most kittens will want something that doesn’t come scented and feels like beach sand.
I hope these work for you! Let me know if they don’t, and especially if you find some other methods that work well for you and yours! Good luck! 🙂
